Guide to Home Decor and Feng Shui

Thanks to Kat Siddall and Start Local for this resource......

Feng means “wind” and Shui means “water”. Developed over 3000 years ago in China where wind and water are associated with good health, Feng Shui is an art and science of connecting the inner being of a human to its external surrounding by examining how the environment in which people live in is impacting them.  The underlying principle is in understanding the dynamic flow of energy throughout the universe.

The ritual behind Feng Shui is to asses accurately the strengths and weaknesses of a given property and to introduce certain supporting adjustments and positive influences in the surroundings. This arrangement strengthens, harmonizes or protects the property in a simple and affordable manner by balancing the energies of the given space and ensuring good health and fortune to the people residing within the property.

Feng Shui is not a belief system with a recognized science or a religion though it can bring positive effects and intangible benefits in order to deal with dire situations, yet it cannot guarantee gain of wealth, health or happiness.

History of Feng Shui
The earliest traces of Feng Shui date back to the Han Dynasty period (200 B.C – 200 A.D) from the south western mountainous region of China. The typography of this mountainous region provided the favorable sites for residence and burial, giving way to the development of modern Feng Shui - known as Form School - which recognized early on that the earth is a breathing and living body and is charged by Chi Energy. With their expertise and knowledge, the ancient practitioners of Feng Shui could identify areas where auspicious Chi energy was present. Further modern interpretations led to the Compass School of Feng Shui that was developed in the plain southern lands of China and took into consideration the difficulty in using mountainous landscape.

Feng Shui Basics
Feng Shui is enabled by many environmentally friendly tools and techniques of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The fundamental part of all its practices lies in forming a balanced and mutually supportive relationship between the five elements of Feng Shui, apart from considering the landscape of the property, its orientation and transition of time. The five elements consist of: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. These five natural elements are also known as “five transformations” or “five phases” and they work to bolster each other as they represent a model of the universe which is constantly changing and cyclical in nature such the seasonal changes, phases of the moon, day and night, life and death. These natural elements of the environment are used in various ways to strengthen, support, enhance, weaken, manage or control each other, depending upon their placement so as to influence the space of the property beneficially. The elements may represent aspirations, seasons, family members, body parts or even a compass direction.
